Kokum (Garcinia indica) – a cousin of Garcinia cambogia that promotes weight loss, but without the associated adverse effects. Kokum is used in Ayurveda to improve digestion, relieve diarrhea or constipation and treat stomach ulcers. It is an overall digestive aid and bowel regulator. It contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which is an appetite suppressant often used to assist with weight loss.
Indian long pepper (pippali or Piper longum) – is a spice indigenous to India. It is used to treat respiratory illness like asthma, cold or cough, as well as digestive imbalance, indigestion, as an anti-diabetic, and for weight loss. It is a rejuvenative spice with anti-aging properties that is beneficial for all body types (Doshas) and good to use all year round.
Gymnema sylvestre (Meshashringi or Shardunika) – used in Ayurveda to regulate blood sugar. It decreases intestinal sugar absorption and promotes insulin secretion to lower blood glucose levels. Perhaps more importantly, gymnema is thought to decrease cravings for sweets. Therefore, it is used to treat diabetics, support weight loss and regulation of digestion and appetite.
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) – used for a wide variety of disorders in Ayurveda. There is some evidence showing that it lowers blood sugar in diabetics. It also has been proven to decrease pain related to menstruation. In Ayurvedic studies, it has also been shown to be affective for weight loss as well as improved athletic performance.
False black pepper (vidanga or Embelia ribes) – works much like black peppercorn in that it facilitates the absorption and potentiates the actions of many accompanying herbs. It has anti bacterial, anti fungal and anti parasitic properties and serves as a digestive aid that promotes weight loss.
